Knights clip spunky Pirates PHOENIX -- The Phoenix Pirates absorbed their fifth straight Skyline Conference boys basketball loss Friday, but coach Randy Shipley isn't pushing the panic button. After battling North Valley to a 31-all halftime tie, the Pirates unraveled in the third quarter and dropped a 54-50 decision to the Knights. "The kids realize our future is ahead of us," Shipley said. "We started three sophomores. We're trying to get better each game out, and lately we've been doing that. We've had two solid outings back-to-back against two of the best teams in the league." Phoenix (2-13, 0-5 Skyline) received a strong performance from junior guard Andy Bartels and a record-setting effort from senior Gabe Willard. Bartels pumped in a game-high 20 points, while Willard made four 3-point goals to break the school career record. Willard was tied with Ben Goodman entering the contest, but now holds the mark by himself with 135. The Pirates' undoing came in the third quarter when they committed seven of their 11 turnovers and only made two field goals. North Valley outscored Phoenix 16-9 in the period to take control. "They made some adjustments at half to take away Willard and Bartels, so someone else had to step up," said Shipley. "It's just one of those situations where we're playing so many young kids and teams have so much size on us, as the game goes on we get worn down." The Knights were led by 6-foot-8 post Warren Byers and junior wing Sam Jarrett, who combined for 31 points.
