Ashland's Grossmann makes all-state team Senior Grizz setter is named to the third team. Teammate Marla Morin, Crater's Nicholette LeBel earn honorable mention nods The Associated Press PORTLAND - Molly Grossmann of Ashland was one of only two Southern Oregon Conference volleyball players to make one of the three Class 4A all-state teams. While 6-foot-1 senior hitter Shannon Burmeister of Roseburg, the SOC player of the year, landed a first-team berth, Grossmann was placed on the third team. Grossmann is a 5-foot-8 senior setter who, like Burmeister, twice was an all-SOC first-teamer. Two SOC players, Crater senior Nicholette LeBel and Ashland junior Marla Morin, received honorable mention. Gresham had the player and coach of the year, respectively, in 5-9 senior Sheena Surplus and Lori Anderson. Surplus' ability to keep cool under pressure helped her earn the top honor. During the regular season, her team trailed Barlow in the second game of a match, 13-1. She and the rest of the Gresham Gophers dug in, won the game 15-3 and took the match. Surplus' grace under fire helped the Gophers through an undefeated season and secure a Class 4A championship. She said she is thankful to be voted player of the year, but diverts the limelight to her teammates. "I don't succeed unless my team succeeds," she said. Gresham's Lori Anderson, who was voted coach of the year after guiding the Gophers to their first state title since 1994, said Surplus deserves the award. "Sheena's a gamer," Anderson said. "I can count on her. Her asset is that she's always calm, and she's not going to quit." The all-state volleyball teams were selected by a ballot of the state's coaches and compiled by The Oregonian. Nominations were made by league representatives. Gresham's Lauren Karpstein, also a senior, joins Surplus on the first team. Other first-team picks are Barlow senior Jodi Bell, the 2000 player of the year; Central Catholic senior Katie Greiner; West Linn senior Lindsay Evans; and Jesuit senior Elizabeth Bishop. In Class 3A, Skyline Conference teams Henley and Lakeview - the state champion and runner-up, respectively - dominated the awards. Megan Albertson, a junior from Lakeview, was honored as player of the year. She was joined on the first team by junior teammate Jessica Childress and Henley senior Sam Young. Henley's Chuck Shannon was voted coach of the year. He also won the award in 1990 and 1991 after guiding the Hornets to back-to-back championships.
