Illinois Valley wrestler gains honor The Oregon Wrestling Classic Committee has presented Illinois Valley's Jed Pennell with one of 10 scholarships for the state of Oregon. Pennell, who has a 4.093 grade-point average, was a three-time Skyline Conference and Class 3A state champion for the Cougar wrestling team. This year, he took home the triple crown after winning state titles in both freestyle and Greco-Roman competition to go with his high school title. He also won titles as a cadet wrestler in all three styles. Other awards and honors won by Pennell include the U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar/Athlete Award and the Youth of the Year Award presented by the Josephine County Boys and Girls Club. Pennell was also involved in various high school clubs and played varsity soccer in the fall. He is a National Honor Society member and served as student body president. Pennell plans to major in physical therapy and medicine, either at the University of Oregon or Oregon State University.
