Jackson St. Bradshaw founded the company in part out of frustration in trying to find certain rare plant seeds. Originally employed as a software engineer, he found himself devoting more and more time to the collection of seeds, first grown in his gardens on the eastern Plains of Colorado and then from wild flora of the western United States, and built up his company until by 2009 his catalog featured 1,000 rare and unusual plant species. California State Employees Association, Chapter 165 (Retired Employees Association), will hold a business meeting and luncheon Thursday, April 7, at Elmer's Restaurant, 2000 Biddle Road, Medford. For more information, please contact Bruce Eliason, membership chairman, at 541-779-2912. The Rogue Valley Orchid Society will meet a week early this month to prepare for its annual orchid show Friday and Saturday, April 15-16. The society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at Anna Maria Creekside, 822 Golf View Drive, Medford. Anyone wishing to enter their orchids at the show is encouraged to attend. Forest roads are showing the stress of a wet spring, managers from the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest say. Over the past six to eight weeks, the forest has received about three times the average rainfall generally received in the early spring. In some areas of the forest, as much as 24 inches of rain has fallen in the previous 27 days. The pavement on Bear Camp Road has slumped 1.5 vertical feet at Milepost 34. Although Bear Camp Road is currently accessible only from the Gold Beach side because of snowpack on the Grants Pass side, visitors are advised to take care when driving on any forest system roads. Motorists should be prepared to encounter road slides, downed trees and potentially impassable situations that can leave them stranded and without help. They should bring extra food, water, blankets, clothing, flashlights and other basic survival gear. To report any road slides, drop-offs or other damage that is not already marked or flagged, contact the nearest ranger station or the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest Supervisor's Office at 541-618-2200.
