James Edward Lickiss, 72, was arraigned on the charges Thursday in Jackson County Circuit Court and remains lodged in the Jackson County Jail on $32,000 bail. A Mercy Flights helicopter transported the 1-year-old girl to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford, according to a press release from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. According to an affidavit by the sheriff's department, the girl "was admitted to the hospital for treatment and doctors advised she would need extensive surgeries later in life to repair the injured areas." The sheriff's department said an update on her condition was not available Thursday. The department said the child’s family called 911 at 4:22 p.m. Wednesday to report that Lickiss had struck the child’s head with the tire of his 1997 Plymouth Neon as he backed out of their shared driveway in the 800 block of Old Trail Creek Road. Lickiss drove away from the scene and returned a short time later to find emergency crews at the residence. Lickiss said he was unaware his vehicle had struck the child. The deputies’ investigation indicated Lickiss showed signs of being under the influence of controlled substances, according to the affidavit. Lickiss has a preliminary hearing in court scheduled for June 16.
