Email Story to a Friend July 6, 2006 Golfers win gold at Special Olympics nationals AMES, Iowa — Golfer Kathleen Sitton and her partner, Becky Thomas, who are both of Medford, won a gold medal Wednesday at the Special Olympics USA National Games. Among other Jackson County entrants, track athlete Travis Burchette-Gould of Medford earned a bronze medal and the Jackson County Sharpshooters basketball team was hampered in a loss when several of its players got the flu. Sitton, 21, and Thomas, 48, had a combined three-day score of 199 in Level 2 alternate shot team competition, well ahead of the runner-up score of 230. Their nine-hole rounds of 72 Tuesday and 62 Wednesday were the lowest in their division. There were five levels of competition played at Ames Golf and Country Club and Coldwater Golf Links. Sitton and Thomas won an Oregon regional championship this year and won state and regional titles last year. This year, they had to pull out of state competition 11„2 weeks ago when Sitton was overcome by heat on the final hole with the team in contention. Advertisement Gould claimed his medal in the 200 meters with a time of 37.2 seconds. Robert Catherman of South Dakota won in 33.7, followed by Brent Mueller of Minnesota in 35.1. The Sharpshooters played three games and lost all three while fighting the flu. They were beaten 33-28 by Hawaii, 47-33 by Kentucky and Massachusetts, 32-28. American Legion Baseball SOUTH MEDFORD COLTS 7-11, KLAMATH FALLS HAWKS 6-1 — South Medford had 26 hits and committed just one error over both games of an Area 4 doubleheader sweep at Harry and David Field. Jared Smith doubled home Taylor Comford with two outs for the winning run in the sixth inning of the opener. Trent Smith, Comford, Jared Smith and AJ Palazzolo each had two hits for South Medford (9-8, 5-3 Area 4), while Josh Camp had three RBIs in Game 1. Trent Smith also had three hits and John Adamson and Mike Whitten each had two in the nightcap. Adamson recorded the pitching win in his first outing of the season. NORTH MEDFORD WINS TWO — At Eugene, North Medford ran its winning streak to 10 games with a pair of victories at the 10-team Best of the West Tournament. The Mavericks (25-5) got two hits apiece from Zach Earle, Jordon Bostwick and Tyler Lake in the 7-3 victory over Auburn in the first game. Shea Bedortha struck out six Eugene batters in the second game to lead North Medford to a 7-1 triumph. Andrew Jones had three RBIs in Game 1. The Mavericks continue pool play today with a game against Thurston. Little League Baseball AGE 11-12 DISTRICT 8 TOURNAMENT — At Central Point, Medford National Central erased a 4-0 deficit with a 10-run fourth inning en route to an 11-4 win over Central Point in a quarterfinal game. Tyler Gould had two hits and Kevin Hoyt keyed the big fourth inning with a two-run double. Pitchers Jeffrey Travis and Austin Reames combined on an 11-strikeout, four-hit performance. Medford National Central (4-1) moves on to face Medford National West tonight at 8 in a semifinal game.
