S. bureau of hatcheries, for the past nine years, has had general charge of hatchery operations in the Rogue River valley, has been appointed by Secretary Redfield to be chief of the division of fish culture at Washington, D. C. Two years ago Mr. O'Malley was promoted to be field superintendent in charge of fish cultural work of the bureau of hatcheries for the Pacific coast, with headquarters at Seattle, and the second promotion follows the death of Robert S. Johnson, and is a tribute to his excellent record with the bureau. Mr. O'Malley will leave for Washington, accompanied by his wife, in about two weeks. Mr. O'Malley started in fish culture work when a young man in his home state, Vermont. He has since been connected with fish hatcheries of the New England states and Colorado, and also in the Puget Sound country. Later he was in charge of the Oregon hatcheries. Mr. O'Malley is well known and popular among a large circle of acquaintances in southern Oregon, all of whom are extending congratulations. It is figured that, on account of his knowledge of local conditions, Mr. O'Malley will be a valuable aid to Rogue river hatchery work. LOCAL AND PERSONAL The sale of the Bell Oro placer mine on the Applegate river is announced this week. The purchasers are C. L. Fritz and J. M. Pitts, experienced mining men of San Francisco. They have already taken charge of the property and, under the superintendency of Mr. Pitts, the equipment and operating force will be enlarged at once. J. D. Bell, of this city, who sold the mine, purchased it about six months ago. Mr. Bell confesses that he is not a mining man of experience, but he saw a valuable property in the Bell Oro, bought it and at once began to operate it. Messrs. Fritz and Pitts are much interested in the promised development of the mineral resources in the region this year.
