Shootings probed By Jonel Aleccia CENTRAL POINT Two separate shootings left one Jackson County man dead and a young woman seriously injured Sunday as local law enforcement officials scrambled to handle the unusual spate of violent crimes. An 18-year-old Phoenix man was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound in a car parked in the 3600 block of Old Military Road, Central Point. Victor Joel Cruz, 1005 Arana Road, was discovered at about 10:30 a.m. in a 1996 Ford Probe on a remote dirt road several hundred feet from the pavement. Jackson County sheriffs deputies recovered no weapon and discerned no motive for the crime. In a separate incident, a young woman was shot several times, apparently by a man she knew, at a small industrial park at 5245 Table Rock Road, Central Point. The woman, believed to be in her early 20s, was taken to Rogue Valley Medical Center, where she underwent surgery, said Oregon State Police Sgt. Bill Floyd, who was on the scene. At 12:14 p.m., a caller notified the Jackson County Sheriffs Department. "A husband just shot his wife several times and left in a red truck with unknown license number," the sheriffs log reported. Privately, public safety workers familiar with the incident said the young woman was shot at least four times by a man with whom she shared a domestic arrangement. Officials cordoned off the parking lot at the Table Rock Industrial Park with yellow tape. Several cars and a truck canopy left in front of large, open doors in the center appeared to be an area of intense focus. Concerned that her attacker remained at large, officials released few details about the woman or the incident. Oregon State Police spokesman Lt. Gregg Hastings said officers continued to search for the man late Sunday. A Rogue Valley Medical Center spokesman declined to release information about the womans condition and referred inquiries to the OSP or the Jackson County District Attorneys office. Reached at home, District Attorney Mark Huddleston declined further comment. Both shooting incidents required activation of the Jackson County Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit. Jackson County Sheriff Bob Kennedy said the crimes taxed the services of most area law enforcement agencies. "We almost never have two in one day," he said.
