FIRES Forest Service battles fire in Kalmiopsis Wilderness Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jun. 11, 2015 at 4:25 PM Updated Jun 11, 2015 at 4:34 PM Posted Jun. 11, 2015 at 4:25 PM Updated Jun 11, 2015 at 4:34 PM » Social News Federal wildland firefighters are battling a blaze just north of the California border in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness Area, the U.S. Forest Service reported today. According to a U.S. Forest Service news release, the Buckskin fire is estimated at between 50 and 75 acres and is reportedly visible from Cave Junction. The fire is about six miles north of the state line, the release said. An air tanker is dropping water on the fire and smoke-jumpers are reportedly being sent from Redmond. Forest Service spokeswoman Virginia Gibbons said no structures are in danger from the fire, which she said is assumed to be a holdover from recent lightning strikes. "It's in the really early stages — we're just getting started fighting it," she said. Members of the Siskiyou Rappel Crew are on the ground fighting the fire, and two hot-shot crews are being reassigned from other fires, the release said.
