PREP ROUNDUP: Phoenix falls short in season opener By Mail Tribune staff Updated: Mar 15, 2022 09:05 PM A A The Phoenix baseball team was pleased with its season-opening performance Tuesday, even though the scoreboard didn’t swing its direction as South Umpqua held on for a 3-2 victory at Lithia & Driveway Fields. For a Pirates team that graduated 13 seniors last year — including all of their starters — Phoenix coach Bill Hutchinson was encouraged with his squad’s early effort despite a lack of offensive production. “We were overall really happy,” said Hutchinson. “It always takes a little longer on offense but we were really happy with our pitching tonight. They did really well.” South Umpqua put the pressure on early in the contest after scoring a pair of runs in the top of the third inning to seize a 3-0 lead. The Pirates (0-1) started to get going at the plate in the fifth inning when they scored both of their runs, capped by Andrew Hull’s triple that drove home Jackson Shilts. Ryan Watts also drove home Tanner Norris with an RBI groundout earlier in the frame. Corey Cunningham was able draw a two-out walk and represent the tying run in the bottom of the sixth but that was as close as the Pirates would come before the final out. The game was called after six innings due to a time limit at the field, formerly known as U.S. Cellular Community Park. Poor field conditions on Phoenix’s home field in Talent forced the game to be moved to the artificial turf ballpark. Hull finished 2-for-3 while the pitching platoon of Karver Wolowicz, Julius Bolstad and Hull combined to allow two runs on five hits and struck out six. Wolowicz and Bolstad were both able to escape one-out jams with runners on second and third base in the second and fourth innings, respectively. Seniors Beau Aldrich and Travis Johnson each went unscathed over four innings apiece to earn victories, while Grant Russo and CJ Seggelink finished off the first and second games, respectively, with hitless efforts for the Crusaders (2-0). Game 1 proved to be a perfect one for St. Mary’s, with Aldrich striking out 10 and Russo fanning two without either allowing a walk. In Game 2, Johnson struck out four with one walk and one earned run, and Seggelink had one strikeout and one walk. Aldrich had a pair of two-run hits in the opener, the last serving as a walk-off effort in the mercy rule contest. Aldrich added two hits and two RBIs in the nightcap. Alan Gomez had two hits in each game, driving in two runs in Game 2. Johnson combined for five hits and two RBIs, while Ean Lawrence had two hits and one RBI in Game 1 and Eli Haynes drove in two in Game 2. South Umpqua sophomore Kaydence Norton went 2-for-3 and had a two-run home run in the bottom of the second to put the Lancers ahead 2-0.
