Amid the fun of barbecues and sparklers comes a reminder from area police of state and local fireworks regulations. Under Oregon law, authorized fireworks can be purchased from fireworks retailers between June 23 and July 6. Legal fireworks may be ignited at authorized locations during this period of time. State law bans the possession, use or sale of fireworks that fly, explode or travel more than 6 feet on the ground or more than 12 inches into the air. Prohibited fireworks include bottle rockets, Roman candles and firecrackers. Individuals who skirt the law face steep fines, up to $500 per violation, and illegal fireworks possession is a class B misdemeanor, meaning offenders can be arrested and face criminal charges such as reckless burning and criminal mischief. Offenders are liable for any damage caused by fireworks, and parents are liable for any fireworks-caused damage by their children. Fireworks are prohibited on all national forestlands, beaches, parks, campgrounds and most other public lands. Medford ordinances ban all fireworks on the Bear Creek Greenway, in city parks, public schools and natural areas with hazardous conditions — particularly north of Cherry Lane and east of North Foothill Road. Ashland ordinances prohibit all fireworks, and municipal law forbids them to be used, sold, stored or advertised within Ashland city limits. When lighting fireworks in designated areas, officials remind people to remember the "Four Be's." Be prepared — Keep water available nearby by using a garden hose or bucket. Be safe — Keep children and pets away from fireworks. Be responsible — After lighting fireworks, never try to relight a dud. Wait 15 to 20 minutes, then soak the firework in a bucket of water before disposal. Be aware — Use only legal fireworks, and use them only in legal places.
