Hidden Valley charges into semifinals ESTACADA Evan Cope and Matt Johnson combined for all Hidden Valleys scoring as the Mustangs charged into the Class 3A/2A/1A state boys soccer semifinals with a 3-1 victory over Estacada Saturday. The fifth-ranked Mustangs (15-1) will host two-time defending state champion LaSalle Tuesday at the Josephine County Fairgrounds in Grants Pass. "We dominated the first half with the best soccer weve played this year," said Hidden Valley coach Charlie Seal, whose team led 2-0 at intermission on a muddy field. "The key today was possession. The first 35 minutes they played chase." The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead at the 15th minute when Cope scored on a low shot from 15 yards off an assist from Johnson. "It was a give-and-go right at the top of the box," said Seal. "Evan tucked it away nicely in the far corner." The pair combined for another goal five minutes later. This time Johnson registered his 32nd goal of the season with the help of Cope. Estacada cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 55th minute on a goal by Mike Gardelius. "They made some adjustments and we came out flat in the second half," said Seal. "It kind of woke the guys up. We started dominating with our possession game again." The Rangers suffered a setback when their leading scorer James Campbell received a red card at the 65th minute. Cope scored an insurance goal, with Johnson getting his second assist at the 70th minute. The performance by Irie Spann and Cope at the midfield and Johnson and Moe Arteaga up front was a key factor in allowing the Mustangs to control the tempo, according to Seal. The Mustangs 6-foot-3 junior goal Tim Vanderstoel also turned in a big effort. "Tim did a good job of winning everything out of the air," said Seal. "Hes such a big guy, he completely intimidates anyone in the box. Thats what you want your goalie to do." Class 4A Soccer KLAMATH UNION 5, SPRAGUE 3 At Klamath Falls, junior Luis Garcia scored four goals as Klamath Union advanced into the boys semifinals. The Pelicans (14-3) will play in Portland at Jesuit on Tuesday. Jesuit defeated Lakeridge 5-0 in another quarterfinal-round match. Alex Casey accounted for the Pels other goal. Klamath Union had an 18-7 advantage in shots on goal. Class 3A Volleyball LAKEVIEW 15-15, HENLEY 7-12 At Eugene, Lakeview captured its first state volleyball title with the win over its Skyline Conference rival. In the second game, No. 6 Lakeview jumped out to a 13-1 lead and the Hornets could never make up the deficit. THE DALLES 15-15, PHOENIX 6-12 At Eugene, Phoenix completed the season with a 28-11 record with a loss in the consolation semifinals. "We came out a little sluggish in the first game," Phoenix coach Tom Murphy said. "We couldnt go from serve receive into any kind of offense. The second game could have gone either way." The Pirates attack was sparked by outside hitters Sutton Jackson (six kills) and April Darby (five kills). Sophomore middle Tiffany Ross also added five kills. Phoenix received a strong defensive effort from Erin Toews and Kelly Goodkin.
