The event, whose theme is "We’re All in This Together," will include keynote addresses by forest activist Julia Butterfly Hill and Paul Hawken, described by organizers as a "socially responsible entrepreneur." Hill gained fame as a tree sitter for remaining in a redwood tree in Northern California for two years, from December 1997 to December 1999, to prevent it from being cut down. Hill and Hawken will speak during a session that begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday in SOU’s Britt Ballroom. Saturday’s keynote address will be by Darryl Cherney, a forest activist who won a civil rights case against the FBI after he and fellow activist Judi Bari were accused of making a bomb that exploded in their car in 1990, seriously injuring Bari. The conference, which includes a series of workshops and other activities, brings together environmentalists, forest activists and others interested in forest and water issues from an environmental perspective. Tickets are on sale at SOU as well as at Headwaters. Admission is $5 for conference participants and $10 for the general public. A limited number of scholarships are available for college students. A Sunday rally starts at 10 a.m. at Triangle Park and ends at the Plaza in downtown Ashland. Hikes to controversial timber sales and ecologically unique forests in Southern Oregon follow the march, beginning at about noon. The conference is being co-hosted by Headwaters, the Ecology Center of the Siskiyous and the Women’s Resource Center. Registration information and more details are available at www.headwaters.org .
