The organization's Collaboration Award went to downtown Medford technology firm Zeal, the Ingenuity Award went to north Medford manufacturer ICWUSA, the Prosperity Award was given to Ashland manufacturer Darex, and the Tenacity Award went to Rogue Valley MicroDevices, a tech manufacturer in east Medford. Outgoing Rogue Community College President Peter Angstadt received SOREDI's Inspiration Award. ICWUSA manufactures instrument mounting devices and recently developed a coating allowing health care professionals to write notes directly on the arm and then wipe it off before seeing the next patient. "This company is all about client's needs and designing new concepts," said SOREDI Business Development Manager Kathy Trautman. "The latest innovation worthy of highest recognition is a coating product applied to the arms of mounting products. Instead of searching for a piece of paper to take notes, or writing it on their hands, medical professionals can scribble notes directly onto the mounting brackets and wipe it off later. This constant drive for improvement and excellence provides an environment where ingenuity flourishes." Zeal was recognized for its attitude of encouraging and embracing other players in the industry, who might otherwise be viewed as competitive threats. "Their worldview is quite the opposite," said presenter Tom Fischer and SOREDI board member. "With this collective effort, much more has been accomplished in making our region an amazing hub for talent." Earning an international reputation with the Drill Doctor bit sharpener, Darex has added the WorkSharp brand of knife sharpeners and has grown to employ more than 150 employees. Rogue Valley MicroDevices started in a 2,400-square-foot facility 12 years ago. The company has grown to 11,000 square feet with 22 employees and expects to add 20 more positions in a planned 50,000-square-foot production space. Among the highlights of Angstadt's tenure at Rogue Community College was a $20 million bond measure passed in May to expand and renovate its three campuses. He was instrumental in developing a partnership between Southern Oregon University, RCC and the Medford Chamber of Commerce to create a Higher Education Center in downtown Medford, the first partnership of its kind in Oregon between a community college and a university. Founded in 1987, SOREDI assisted in the creation of 209 jobs last year with a wage impact of $7.8 million and regional private investment of $27.2 million.
