Scores of volunteers leave their very valuable equipment and artifacts there for the public to enjoy. It is not clear that the Medford City Council consulted these groups before making the decision to increase "off-season" use of the parking area for the very important and needed caring for the homeless. During the winter Railroad Park is used for: The Rotary-sponsored "Polar Express" in December — an event open to the public. Girl Scouts and other group excursions. Private parties that help the five clubs that manage Railroad Park raise money to keep the park run-days free. Club members who build, maintain and improve exhibits and meet regularly. I hope the city of Medford will be able to provide increased police surveillance during events at Railroad Park, that restrooms will be kept open this winter (they were not last winter), that there will be regular trash pickups and that the groups helping the homeless, the city, and the Railroad Park clubs can all work together to make this project successful.  Communication is the key. Alice Mullaly, Central Point Writer is wrong As Mr. Ogle requested, I will happily tell him that he is wrong: This nation was founded on the idea that the cancers of the Old World were not to be propagated here in the New World, especially not the rancor and deprivation springing from the rampant strife between Christians. The social ills and upheaval resulting from the doctrines of a triune god, original sin, virgin birth, resurrection from death, et al., in alliance with the power of the state argued against their use in forming a new, constitutional republic here. The educated colonial classes were deeply immersed in the thinking of the Enlightenment Age, which embraced a forward-looking, optimistic attitude regarding mankind's potential. The Old World tendency towards superstition, as well as the religious tools of dogma, prophecy, miracles and revelations were increasingly viewed as being untenable in light of this new spirit. The enthusiastic intention was to use logic, reason and the nascent scientific methodology as the driving forces to build a new society and government. Christians have helped build this nation, but it's not theirs to define or do with as they wish. John Gaffey, Ashland Dreams become nightmares All “dreams” easily turn into nightmares. Mr. Marks' dream is to abolish Oregon’s very weak proportional income tax and, with it, the state’s pitifully small capital gains tax (more noticeable in its avoidance than its collection). That part of his fantasy, he says, would bring a flood of corporate headquarters into the state — no guarantees they would produce new jobs here. Why would they bother, when they already have overseas "home offices” which insulate them from most taxes and with Mexico and China already producing most of the stuff we are brainwashed into consuming? He brilliantly follows this up with a proposed 6-8 percent sales tax — the most regressive tax of all, hurting mainly the bottom 90 percent of Oregonians. And this would be accompanied by cuts in essential government spending, cutting waste and inefficiency — the usual suspects unknown in private industry. Ah, but these cuts could be made up for by soaking the tourists: what genius! Or, just maybe, we will wake up soon enough to shake off the yoke of the capitalist consumer society that is destroying our politics and our civil society just as it is destroying the ecological basis of our lives. Gerald Cavanaugh, Ashland No felons in the NFL The solution is not that complicated: From this day forward, no felons in contract. This is not a high bar for behavior. It is even-handed. Those felons presently in contract would think twice before a repeat offense. Other individuals would police themselves, as they should, or lose their contract. All other citizens have to follow the law. The NFL could resume character role building, instead of damage control.
