Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 6, 2005 Pedestrian, pet dog die after being struck by a truck on Highway 62 By CHRIS CONRAD Mail Tribune A man and his dog were killed Wednesday night while trying to cross an unlit section of Highway 62 in Medford. Police would not identify the man until his family was told of his death, which may take a while in this case. "We think we’re going to have some difficulty notifying next of kin," Medford police Lt. Mike Moran said. At 7:31 p.m. the man and his black Labrador mix attempted to cross Highway 62 just east of Poplar Drive when they were struck in the northbound lane by a full-size Dodge Ram pick up, Moran said. The driver told police that he didn’t see the man — who was wearing dark clothing and walking a black dog — until it was too late, Moran said. Advertisement The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The dog, whose body came to rest 10 feet from its owner, died shortly after police arrived, Moran said. The impact spread a 50-foot trail of debris across the highway. A mixture of broken glass and the man’s personal belongings — a backpack, two shoes and a hat — littered the black asphalt. Police shut down two northbound lanes of the highway as authorities poured in from various agencies. Medford officers built a perimeter from road flares and funneled traffic down the center lane. A Medford police detective was called to the scene. Even though the details surrounding this case were clear, protocol demands that any death that occurs outside of a doctor’s care be investigated by a detective, Moran said. The driver was given a field sobriety test for drugs and alcohol. He would also speak with Bob Gas, the police chaplain who provides grief concealing at traumatic scenes, Moran said. "He’s an invaluable resource on a case like this where there are strong emotions," Moran said. Police kept traffic blocked as a traffic team reconstructed the accident to determine the speed and circumstances of the accident. Medford police were assisted at the scene by an Ashland traffic officer and Jackson County sheriff’s Sgt. Dace Cochran. Moran said that he would not have the dead man’s identity available until around 10 a.m. today.
