James Horace Katz, 59, of the 300 block of Freeman Road, faces second-degree assault and first-degree burglary charges for the alleged April 4 attack. He remains lodged in the Jackson County Jail on $250,000 bail, with his case pending in Jackson County Circuit Court. Central Point police said in an affidavit Katz went to his neighbor's home on nearby Ash Street to argue with him over damage to Katz's lawn. Katz allegedly began hitting his neighbor with his fists. The neighbor tried to push Katz out of his home, but Katz allegedly started striking him with an aluminum cane. The neighbor allegedly tried to fend off Katz with a wooden chair and kept trying to push him out of the home, the affidavit said. Police allege Katz finally discontinued the attack and threw the damaged cane on the roof. Katz called 911 to report his neighbor had attacked him, but police said they found no apparent injuries on Katz. However, the neighbor had injuries to his left arm plus bleeding from his chin and ear. The injuries were photographed, the affidavit said. Katz is a registered sex offender, according to Jackson County Jail records. Registered sex offender records list him as having a criminal history of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child younger than 14.
