ASHLAND — Blackstone Audio has orchestrated marketing and distribution of audio books to near perfection since its inception 28 years ago, even developing a digital rental niche. Now the audio book publisher, with 10,000 titles in its archive, is treading into new territory — real paper-and-ink books, and e-books. "Blackstone looks to pursue this industry as we have with audio and other formats," said Greg Boguslawski, director of sales and merchandising for Blackstone Audio Inc and its Downpour.com unit. "We've been working with print publishers since the beginning as an audio publisher, and now we're stepping into a bigger role as an all-around publisher, looking at rights holders and now the ability to acquire all rights from them and take their titles into the market place through print, audio and e-book." First on the market from Blackstone Publishing will be "The Blood Flag" by New York Times bestselling author James W. Huston on Nov. 10. The work will be available in all formats, including audio, e-book, as well as hardcover print. This thriller, by the author of Falcon Seven, follows FBI agent Kyle Morrissey as he uncovers a disturbing international plot to bring back the Third Reich. Agent Morrissey embarks on an adrenaline-fueled mission to put a stop to the rebirth of an insidious evil. Blackstone will also embark on a collection of classic Western titles in November, starting with Louis L’Amour’s "A Man Called Trent" and "The Rider of Lost Creek" along with Zane Grey’s "Silver Mane"and "The Water Hole" available in paperback and e-book editions. Boguslawski said the firm intends to publish 15 to 20 new editions during 2016. "Blackstone is going to be following along the same lines as we did for our audio publications," he said. " We're using a lot of the same buyers and partners within the industry. I'm working with the national distributors we use through our audio books as well as direct to retail store chains and our direct to consumer, Downpour.com will also be hosting our new print editions." Three years ago, Blackstone launched a direct-to-consumer website, www.downpour.com, giving customers the ability to either purchase or rental Blackstone Audio titles, as well as those from 30 other publishers, including Penguin Random House, Hachette Audio, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, and HarperCollins. The company, founded by Craig and Michelle Black in 1987, was sold to AudioGO in January 2013, but 10 months later, the new owners sold back the company, sans its United Kingdom holdings.
