Other customers are probably neighbors or co-workers, and the staff maintains a cheery attitude even when there’s a line out the door. Adam’s Deli and Catering is Medford’s food paradise for those craving the ideal deli experience. I went for a midweek lunch, and the restaurant was packed. The deli is housed in a small space, but it was roomy inside. Brick walls and high archways gave a hint of an Italian atmosphere. A trio of forest green, red and beige tied the decor together. Even as people filtered in and out during the lunch rush, it never felt cramped or loud. At the counter I ordered the Tuscan sandwich ($7) and my mom had the Santa Fe wrap ($7.50). Sandwiches and wraps are available in full and half portions. We were there near the end of lunch, and as a result there was a long, but not unreasonable, wait for our meals. The Tuscan sandwich was piled high with roast beef, Gorgonzola cheese, lettuce and tomato between two slices of foccacia bread. The only downfall was that the Italian dressing soaked through the bread and created a soggy sandwich bottom. I couldn’t pick up the sandwich and eat it the traditional way. I asked the woman at the counter for a knife and fork and settled in for round two. I dove in again and was not disappointed. The roast beef was flavorful and so thinly sliced I could see through it. The cheese gave the sandwich an unexpected bite, and I loved the tang of the Italian dressing. The bread was too soft, which could have been avoided by toasting it, but the sandwich was excellent. My mom’s Santa Fe wrap was better at holding together. It was tightly wrapped and stuffed with smoked turkey, avocado, bacon, cabbage, Havarti cheese and a raspberry-chipotle sauce. While my sandwich suffered from too much dressing, my mom noted her wrap could have benefited from more sauce. The raspberry chipotle mixture added a nice kick to the wrap and complemented the other ingredients well. The restaurant offers a wide selection of breakfast items, sandwiches, wraps, drinks, desserts and hot entrees. Breakfast options include biscuits and gravy, with one egg and fruit ($5.50) and a two-egg cheese omelet with fruit and toast ($5.50). Bacon or ham can be added for $1. The menu is extensive. If you’re in a hurry, Adam’s Deli offers an express to-go service. Call or fax your order in and it will be waiting for you at the pickup window. They also cater. Adam’s Deli offers a substantial selection of food, drink and services, which can be daunting for a first-time customer. But that’s what makes the eatery such a gem.
