Mail Tribune 100, Feb. 23, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 23, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Feb. 23, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Feb. 23, 1916 SUGAR FACTORY EXPERTS HERE Mr. Geo Austin, head agriculturist of the Utah-Idaho Sugar company of Salt Lake City, Utah, will arrive at Medford this morning. He will spend Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in the Rogue River valley in the interests of the Oregon-Utah Sugar company, viewing the valley and lecturing to the farmers and all others interested in the sugar beet culture. Mr. Austin's first lecture will be delivered at the Talent city hall tonight (Wednesday evening) at 7:30 o'clock, Thursday evening at Central Point hall at 7:30 and Friday evening at the Public library, Medford at the same hour, 7:30. Mr. Austin was the first man employed by the Utah-Idaho Sugar company and has been their head agriculturist for over 26 years. No man in the west is better qualified to talk "sugar beets" than he, and his lectures should be of vital interest to every citizen in the valley at this particular time. Mr. Austin is accompanied by his son Edwin who had supervision over 11,000 acres of beets at Garland, Utah for the past few years, and Mr. J. Pettingill, also one of the successful field superintendents of the Utah-Idaho company. These gentlemen will remain permanently in the Rogue River valley and have charge of the agricultural department of the local company. Mr. Alex Nibley, secretary of the company, accompanied these gentlemen from Salt Lake. Mr. Nibley says that the first car of beet seed has been shipped and should reach here within a week. Beet drills for seeds are also expected with the next few weeks. They will notify the local office when they desire instructions on the preparation of their land for seeding. LOCAL AND PERSONAL Chief Forester Erickson met with the stockmen of the upper section of the valley this week and discussed with them various problems it will be necessary to solve soon in order to protect the stock interests of that region this year. The stockmen talk of leasing the government reserve. They will also ask the authorities to increase the bounty on coyote scalps in order to hurry the destruction of those animals before rabies develops in that section.
