Poor first inning dooms Crater in playoffs CLACKAMAS -- One bad inning proved too much to overcome for the Crater High softball team. Clackamas took advantage of three walks, a hit-batsman, one error and just one hit to score four first-inning runs that proved to be the difference in its 6-3 Class 4A state playoff win over the Comets. Kara Ray started on the mound for Crater but could only manage one out and gave way to Andrea Perdue, who went the rest of the way. "We had problems throwing strikes today," said Crater coach Mike Meunier. "We just never really made the adjustments to the strike zone." Perdue settled down and kept the Comets in the game until they finally broke across for a run in the sixth. Clackamas answered right back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, once again taking advantage of Crater miscues. The Comets put runners on in the seventh but could manage only two runs. "We hit the ball all day pretty well," said Meunier. "We just left too many runners on base." Ray and Brandy Wolcer led Crater, which ended its season with a 14-12 record, with two hits apiece. Sophomore Samantha Marrs yielded only three hits in a losing cause. The Cavers, who finished their season with a 20-8 record, threatened to score in the fourth when Seanne Doyel reached on an error and advanced all the way to third. But Doyel was stranded there. The Indians (19-8), the SOC No. 3 team, face Valley League champion North Salem on Friday. Roseburg gave Nelson all the runs she would need in the first inning. The Indians strung together singles by Nataly Tatone, Erin Goodell, Shannon Brewmeister and a sacrifice fly by Molly Liston for three runs. Class 3A ELMIRA 4, PHOENIX 2 -- At Elmira, a pair of double plays wiped out scoring opportunities for Phoenix and three errors led to the Elmira's winning rally. Phoenix (19-8) scored two runs in the fifth inning to pull into a 2-2 tie on Beth Nikodym's bases-loaded double down the right field line. But Elmira got out of the inning without any more damage on a bases-loaded double play. In the sixth, Kasey Sconce opened with a single for the Falcons. After a fly out, two errors, a single and another error, the Sky Em League runner-up scored twice more for a 4-2 lead. Phoenix had the bases loaded in the first inning on singles by Jennifer Dunlap and Jeanette Hudnall and a fielder's choice by Michelle McEvoy, but a double play ended the scoring chance. Dunlap had two hits for the Pirates. Elmira (22-5) advances in the playoffs with a road game against Brookings-Harbor Friday.
