However, I already have received my canceled check from my bank. What steps should I take to correct the error? — Randall C. Eagle Point According to IRS spokesman Shawn George, If a taxpayer gets a notice from the IRS that says it has received his tax return, but not his payment, and the taxpayer knows the payment check has cleared his bank account, he should call the number on the notice or call 1-800-829-1040 and select the personal accounts option. The IRS employee who answers the call will try to locate the payment and apply it to the taxpayer’s account. If that is unsuccessful, the employee will provide information to the taxpayer on how to proceed. If the taxpayer follows the instructions, the situation should be resolved. In the unlikely event that the taxpayer gets another notice saying the IRS still has not received his payment, he should call the Taxpayer Advocate Service at 877-777-4778. An advocate will be assigned until the situation is resolved. Send questions to "Since You Asked," Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
