When we went to donate to Goodwill they refused over half the load! We then took the same items Goodwill refused and donated them to a second-hand store that gladly took everything we had. Our experience has made us rethink our options. Please advise and thank you. — Davy T., Medford We're betting that your television, microwave and exercise equipment didn't make the cut, Davy. While Southern Oregon Goodwill does accept most items, provided they are in good working condition and aren't stained or dilapidated, there is a much shorter list of unacceptable items, which includes "e-waste" and exercise equipment. Exercise equipment is very hard to sell and simply takes up too much space, particularly in Goodwill's tiny White City store, said Goodwill spokeswoman Karen Philips. TVs, VCRs, microwaves, computers, cell phones and anything else with electronic components typically contain toxic materials and can't easily be disposed of, she said. Goodwill started implementing its e-waste standards a few years ago in the midst of changing environmental regulations around the country, Philips said. American Appliance Recyclers on White City's Avenue G will accept most e-waste for a fee. The company recycles cell phones for free. There are a few local nonprofit groups that do accept some of the items rejected by Goodwill. The Salvation Army takes cable-ready, remote-controlled TVs, turntable-style microwaves and exercise equipment when its stores aren't already full of it. Arc of Jackson County also accepts TVs, but because of its smaller delivery site prefers that donors call 779-4520 to make arrangements. Goodwill welcomes questions if donors just aren't sure whether an item will be accepted. Call 772-3300. Send questions by e-mail to [email protected].
