After Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst announced the firing of Bo Pelini on Sunday, Frost’s name immediately surfaced as a possible candidate to become the Cornhuskers’ next head coach. Frost, a former star quarterback at Nebraska, is in his second season as Helfrich’s offensive coordinator. Oregon ranks fourth nationally in scoring offense (45.9 ppg) and total offense (539.5 ypg). “No one has reached out to me specifically on that one,” Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens said when asked about Frost on Sunday night. Frost has been nominated for the Broyles Award given to the nation’s top assistant. Before being promoted to offensive coordinator by Helfrich, he was the Ducks’ wide receivers coach under Chip Kelly. After playing for Bill Walsh at Stanford, Frost transferred to Nebraska, where he led the Huskers to 24-2 record and a national championship as a starter for Tom Osborne. He also played for Bill Parcells and Mike Tomlin during a six-year NFL career. Frost is also the quarterbacks coach at Oregon. His prize pupil, Marcus Mariota, is the Heisman Trophy favorite with 3,470 yards passing, 636 yards rushing and a Pac-12-record 47 total touchdowns this season. Mullens isn’t worried about rumors of Frost as a potential candidate for the job at Nebraska, or anywhere else, distracting the Ducks during the program’s preparations for Friday’s Pac-12 championship game against Arizona and possibly an appearance in the College Football Playoff. “What I will say is that for the most part, people respect what’s happening and understand what’s going on and the time constraints and will be respectful of that,” Mullens said. “These don’t have to get done tomorrow, and if there’s somebody on our staff who’s performed at a high level and deserves an opportunity, I think people will be understanding of where we are.” Oregon will play Nebraska in Lincoln in 2016 with the Huskers visiting Autzen Stadium in 2017. “I have a great affection for the University of Nebraska — what the program stands for, what the people of Nebraska stand for,” Frost said last year. “There’s a lot to admire about that program. I think Oregon is very similar. We do things the right way here, with good people.” DUCK AWARDS: Oregon squeezed in the team banquet on Sunday between Saturday night’s 47-19 victory over Oregon State and film study for the high-stakes rematch with the Wildcats. Mariota and senior safety Erick Dargan earned awards as Oregon’s offensive and defensive players of the year, respectively. Other winners were: Senior wide receiver Keanon Lowe, Todd Doxey Award for the player who best exemplifies the traits of spirituality, dedication and brotherhood. Freshman running back Royce Freeman, Len Casanova Award for the first-year player who best exemplifies the athletic ideals and inspiration of the former head coach and athletic director. Senior running back Kenny Bassett, Elmer Sahlstrom Award for the senior maintaining an outstanding academic record who has demonstrated an exemplary attitude and tremendous contributions. Junior tight end Pharaoh Brown, Duane J. Cargill Memorial for the outstanding offensive impact player. Junior linebacker Joe Walker, Dudley Clarke Memorial for the most improved player. Senior linebacker Derrick Malone, Bob Officer Award for the player who excels in spite of physical adversity. Freshman offensive tackle Tyrell Crosby, Pancake Club Award for the player who knocks down the most opposing defenders. Senior center Hroniss Grasu, Ed Moshofsky Trophy for the outstanding offensive lineman. Junior defensive end DeForest Buckner, Joe Schaffeld Trophy for top defensive lineman. Freshman receiver Charles Nelson, Gordon E. Wilson Award for the outstanding special teams player. Senior running back Ayele Forde (Offense), sophomore defensive back Michael Manns (defense) and freshman running back Tony James (special teams) are the scout team players of the year. POLL POSITION: Despite its dominating performance in the Civil War, Oregon remained No. 3 in the Associated Press poll behind No. 1 Alabama (11-1) and No. 2 Florida State (12-0). The Ducks received five first-place votes compared to 25 for the Crimson Tide and 29 for the defending national champion Seminoles. TCU (10-1) moved up to No. 4 and Baylor moved up to No. 5 after Mississippi State’s loss to rival Mississippi. Arizona (10-2) climbed from No. 12 to No. 8 after winning the South Division. Other Pac-12 teams in the rankings are No. 16 UCLA (9-3), No. 17 Arizona State (9-3) and No. 24 Utah (8-4). The coaches poll has the same top four: 1. Alabama, 2. Florida State, 3. Oregon and 4. TCU.
