Girls prep basketball More-focused Grizzlies rout Crook County ASHLAND -- After a subpar shooting performance Friday against Eagle Point, Ashland girls basketball coach Heather Roberts summoned the Grizzlies into the gymnasium for a workout Saturday morning prior to a non-conference game with Crook County. The extra practice paid off. Ashland responded with its best shooting of the season and used a high-pressure defensive style to overwhelm the visitors from Prineville, 94-46. "The kids were focused from the beginning," said Roberts, whose team shot better than 50 percent from the field (40-79). "We were hitting our jumpers. If the kids nail them early they get into a rhythm." Ashland junior point guard Jenny Pippa continued to perform at a high level with 21 point and seven assists. "Jenny's been our most consistent player all year," said Roberts. "She's scored 20 or more points in three of our six games." The Grizzlies (4-2) forced 20 turnovers -- many coming in the first 1 quarters before pulling back on its fullcourt press. Ashland led 55-31 at halftime, then limited the Cowboys to only 15 points after intermission. "At halftime, we talked about playing real good halfcourt defense," said Roberts, "and our kids responded." Junior post Chelsea Morgan led the Grizzlies with 23 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out. For the first time this season, everyone on the Grizzlies' squad scored. "We're getting to know each other and we're playing together well," said Roberts. "It was really fun to watch." Lucas, who had been mired in a shooting slump, drilled three outside jumpers in the first period as the Eagles (1-5) took an early 11-8 lead. The Panthers (5-3) play Clackamas in the tournament semifinals at 5:45 p.m. Monday. South trailed by two points at halftime but outscored Century 37-25 after the break. Kellie Thomas led the Panthers with 14 points, while Lynn Wooton and Nicole Munoz contributed 13 points each.
