For his senior project, which is required for graduation, he has written a series of stories on other senior projects. About the student: Kate Warren has been involved in music for as long as she has been able to sing. She is a senior at North Medford High and is involved in both the Chamber Choir and the Concert Choir. As if that were not enough to fulfill her thirst for music, she sings in the Rogue Valley Youth Ensemble as well. Her father, Sean Warren, is a well-known American studies teacher at North and her mother, Angela Warren, is the classical administrator for the Britt Festival. Singing is not her only skill when it comes to music; she has taken lessons on the piano and she says she plans to pursue it more in college. What's the project? She is learning to conduct three songs for two different choirs for the Rogue Valley youth chorus concert, which will be held at the Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater at 7 p.m. today. She will be conducting "Mary Had a Little Blues" and "MI Y Intone Of" for the Rogue Valley Children's Chorus. "The children's chorus is a real challenge, because I have to keep all the students engaged," said Warren. The Children's Chorus is made up of a varying age group, ranging from fifth grade to the eighth grade which, she says, makes it difficult to find a common ground to teach them all. "They are all at different points in their lives," she said. She will also conduct "You are the New Day" for the Rogue Valley Youth Ensemble, consisting of eighth-graders and older. Pam Nordquist, a longtime friend of Kate Warren and the director of the two choirs, is her mentor for this project. "Pam has been a kind mentor and a close friend," Warren said. "She is a wonderful person. She has been an inspiration to me in more than just music." Why choose this?: "I love music, it's my passion. I don't think I could live without it. It's the love of my life," Warren said. She also said she wanted to do something original. "Nobody has ever conducted the children's choir or the youth ensemble for their project before," she said. How does this project make a difference? "Some of the music programs for the elementary schools have been cut," said Warren, "I feel like I have been given a chance to participate in giving them more opportunity to learn about the fine arts." She feels that music can apply to all aspects of life. She sees music as a great way to teach teamwork.
