Submissions are now being accepted for the inaugural event, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum in Ashland. The first Maker Faire, held by MAKE Media in the Bay Area in 2006, spurred a wave of events that have become a mainstay in cities worldwide. The Jackson County event is one of more than 150 small festivals across the nation that have blossomed out of their large-scale counterparts. MAKE Media calls the faire "part science fair, part country fair, part something entirely new." Featuring new technologies, innovative projects and upcycled arts, the family-friendly faires are a mecca for techies, crafters, DIYers, engineers, garage tinkerers, inspiration seekers — anyone with a love for learning or seeing something new. Organizers of the Rogue Valley Mini Maker Faire have opened the submission period to makers, artists, performers and crafters to apply. Some of the standard fare includes everything from student projects to puppets and robotics, as well as food vendors and performers of all stripes. There is no age restriction, and everyone is encouraged to apply. Approved entrants will be given a booth where they can showcase their project to the public in an informal, show-and-tell format. For makers and festival-goers alike, the faire is a wide-open forum to appreciate the community's creations and network with fellow Rogue Valley residents. The submission period is open until Sep. 16 and welcomes group and individual submissions. Late entries will be viewed based upon available space. Entrants will by notified of their submission status by Oct. 7. There is no fee for booths for non-commercial makers (who do not plan to sell their creations); the fee for booths for commercial makers selling their wares is $100, due by Oct. 14.
