GIRLS SOCCER Panthers storm back to level Cavers, 4-1 At halftime, the South Medford girls soccer team found itself on the short end of a 1-0 score Tuesday in its Southern Oregon Conference opener. But after a pep talk by coach Leslie Lang, the Panthers roared back in the second half to score four goals and defeat Grants Pass, 4-1, at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park. Colleen Salisbury and Tiffany Mason both scored two goals to lead South Medford. "I told them (the South players) that we just needed to step it up in the second half and then we would find our rhythm," said Lang. "We played very well in the second half. "I thought Colleen (Salisbury) was awesome in the second half," said Lang. "She showed the mental toughness to get to the right spots to score." The Panthers improved their overall record to 3-3 in winning their SOC opener. Katie Casebeer and Kacy Clark had assists on South goals. EAGLE POINT 5, CRATER 0 -- At Central Point, Stephanie Lucas went on another scoring binge as the Eagles soared past Crater in the SOC opener for both clubs. The senior scored her team's first four goals then assisted on the fifth as the Eagles improved to 5-1-1 overall. It was just Eagle Point's second SOC win ever. Lucas scored at the 12th and 22nd minutes of the first half to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage at halftime. She kicked two more in the first 18 minutes of the second half then set up Jenna Bilden for the final goal. Lucas now has 31 goals on the season and 92 in her career. Eagle goalie junior Tiffany Cherry played a whale of game, pouncing on no less than six close shots by Stacey Schmelzer. She also repelled a penalty shot by Emily Robinson in the second half. Crater fell to 1-4-1 overall. NORTH MEDFORD 4, ROSEBURG 1 -- Bethanie Bryant tallied one goal and one assist as North Medford (4-3, 1-0 SOC) knocked off previously undefeated Roseburg (4-1-3, 0-1 SOC). McKenzie Weiler gave North the initial lead on a header with an assist from Bryant at the 21st minute. Late in the first half, Denali Tice's goal off Stacey Beskow's assist made the score 2-0. Roseburg cut the margin to 2-1 early in the second half on a contested goal that hit the top crossbar and bounced to the ground, but was ruled it crossed the goal line. North countered on Bryant's penalty kick at the 65th minute and Christine Cameron's goal six minutes later. The Black Tornado received strong play from midfielders Katie Grace and Tennille Bennett and forward Heather Johnson, who got an assist on the final goal. North Medford outshot Roseburg, 28-8. KLAMATH UNION 3, ASHLAND 1 -- At Klamath Falls, the Pelicans used two goals by Brianne Hackett and one by Daniel Stewart to start their Southern Oregon Conference season on a positive note. Ashland's goal came in the 76th minute by junior forward Lindsey Huyett. Kristen McNaught got the assist on a crossing pass from the end line. Ashland has a 1-4 season record and a 0-1 Southern Oregon Conference record. Klamath Union improved to 1-0 and 3-3-1 overall.
