Jeffrey Scott Ernest Gourneau II, 26, faces charges of attempted murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon for allegedly stabbing his 25-year-old brother, Rodney Lee Gourneau, on March 4 at McKee Bridge in the Applegate Valley. Jeffrey Gourneau allegedly drove his injured brother to the Applegate Fire Department station on Upper Applegate Road. Mercy Flights transported Rodney Gourneau via helicopter to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center. Medical staff at the hospital told investigators Rodney Gourneau’s spinal cord was partially cut, causing a loss of mobility on his right side, according to an affidavit by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. A witness said the brothers had been in a physical fight near the McKee Bridge. Rodney Gourneau reportedly screamed that he thought Jeffrey Gourneau was going to kill him, the affidavit said. Investigators found a knife with blood on the blade in Jeffrey Gourneau’s pocket, the affidavit said. Jeffrey Gourneau entered pleas of not guilty to the charges against him Wednesday in Jackson County Circuit Court. He has a pre-trial conference hearing set for March 28. He is being held in the Jackson County Jail without bail. Jeffrey Gourneau’s lengthy criminal history includes a conviction for third-degree assault in 2013 after he and his brother got in a fight with another man. The man told Medford police he lost a tooth in the fight, went home, got a gun and pistol-whipped both brothers, according to court records. Jeffrey Gourneau was convicted of fourth-degree assault in 2011 after assaulting a woman, and between 2008 and 2013 had convictions for unlawful use of a weapon, first-degree burglary, first-degree theft and multiple counts of methamphetamine possession. Rodney Gourneau has his own lengthy criminal history, including a 2013 conviction for third-degree assault for the 2013 fight alongside his brother.
