Woods nabs first-team hoops nod Ashland senior caps career as leader in three categories By Greg Stiles Four years flashed by, almost as fast as Jackie Woods could swoop from the high post to the hoop. Pressed into service because of teammates� injuries as a freshman, Woods made her mark again and again for the Ashland High Grizzlies basketball team. She was instrumental in Ashland appearing in three straight Class 4A girls state basketball tournaments and leaves as the school�s career leader in scoring, rebounding and steals. So it comes as no surprise that Woods would be named a first-team all-state performer � the first from Ashland. "She�s deserving of that honor," says Ashland coach Heather Roberts. "I think she had a great career here." A career that included 1,365 points, 470 rebounds and 320 steals. Many of the thefts came off the press as the nearly-6-foot Woods reeled in errant and not-so-off-target passes. "That�s why our press worked so good," says Roberts. "When you have big kids who can run, it makes everything else so much better. Most people can keep up with your guards. But you don�t see a post that fast." Woods has signed a letter of intent to Loyola Marymount University in Southern California. She joined player of the year Chelsea Wagner of Springfield, Lisa Faulkner and Kelli Spencer of Oregon City and Carrie Buckner of Crescent Valley on the first team. Springfield�s recently retired Charlie Olds was voted coach of the year. Crater center Jody McLeod and forward Amy Denson were second-team selections, while Crater guard Sarah Pool and Klamath Union guard Sam Gilbert gained honorable mention. Woods brought a different dimension to the Grizzlies. "I remember (former Klamath Union coach Jack Sharp) telling me, �How lucky you are because you don�t get players like that very often,�" Roberts says. "I think she�s been the most amazing player to watch. I�ve had some pretty talented kids. But for pure athleticism and raw talent ... sometimes you would say, �How could she do that?� It was just pretty amazing." Woods led Ashland with a 17.3 scoring average this season and topped the state tournament with a 21.5 average, while grabbing 10.5 rebounds. "She still has some growing to do," Roberts says. "But I think people saw a lot of growth the last couple years. She wanted to do too much at times and would get into foul trouble because she was too aggressive. "With a kid like that, you know something�s going to happen, and there�s been much more good than not good. You just take it. That�s part of what makes her so dangerous." Grants Pass senior center Ian Elseth was a first-team selection on the boys team.
