ROGUE RIVER Fire engulfs house on Hwy. 99 near Rogue River Comment By Damian Mann Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Damian Mann Mail Tribune Posted May. 10, 2015 at 8:54 PM Updated May 10, 2015 at 9:32 PM By Damian Mann Mail Tribune Posted May. 10, 2015 at 8:54 PM Updated May 10, 2015 at 9:32 PM » Social News A fire ripped through the upper story of a house at 5503 Rogue River Highway Sunday afternoon, forcing the temporary closure of Highway 99 by emergency crews. “I was pretty shocked to see this fire,” said David Owens, a 58-year-old neighbor. “I heard the daughter coming out, calling 911 and yelling for her dad in the shop.” The fire started around 5:30 p.m. Sunday. “I saw black smoke coming out of all parts of the attic by the time the fire department got here,” Owens said. “It doesn’t look good when you have flames coming out windows.” The blue two-story house is owned by Louis and Michelle Grosse and was built in 1930, according to Jackson County records. Electrical lines were cut to the house, which is close to the Rogue River in a neighborhood of one to two-acre properties. Jackson County lists the address in Gold Hill, but the blue house is located just outside the town of Rogue River. Two hours after the fire started, flames were still coming out of the attic area, Owens said An official with Rogue River Fire District No. 1 said the roadway was blocked while fire crews worked to put out the stubborn blaze. Firefighters were also warning motorists to stay away from the scene because of the closure of the road to allow the staging of a number of emergency vehicles. No cause of fire has been released yet, and the damage estimate wasn’t available late Sunday. The Rogue River Police Department was the first on the scene, and Rogue River firefighters were soon joined by reinforcments from Fire District No. 3. “They were just lucky that nobody was hurt,” Owens said.
