K-Falls man poisoned woman with Visine eyedrops ... Umpqua Hot Springs shut down by E. coli ... Family unknowingly took in fugitive By ALBERTO ENRIQUEZ MailTribune.com By ALBERTO ENRIQUEZ Posted Oct. 8, 1997 at 2:00 AM Updated Jan 12, 2011 at 1:21 PM By ALBERTO ENRIQUEZ Posted Oct. 8, 1997 at 2:00 AM Updated Jan 12, 2011 at 1:21 PM » Social News ASHLAND -- A single mother learned Monday that she had boarded a murdersuspect after coming to the aid of a fellow motorist whose engine caughtfire on Interstate 5. Ashland police said Tuesday that they responded to a tip and arrestedWayne Weston Burleson, 20, of Westminster, Calif., on a warrant for murderat 3:30 p.m. Monday in the woman's Lincoln Street home. Burleson was held on $250,000 bail in the Jackson County Jail, wherehe waived extradition to California on Tuesday. He will be transported within10 days. Ashland police Sgt. Ric Walsh said the arrest went without incident. We made contact at the home, Walsh said. We showedher a photo. She said, `He's in the back taking a shower.' He had his pantson by the time we got back there, but it couldn't have gone smoother. Detective Terry Selinske, of the Westminster Police Department, saidTuesday that the arrest came as no surprise because Burleson had remainedin contact with friends in Westminster since leaving the area shortly afterthe murder of Steven Wayne Preston, 32, also of Westminster. Preston's body was found on Sept. 22 dumped alongside the Garden GroveFreeway near Beach Boulevard, which leads to Huntington Beach. He had suffereda gunshot wound to the chest. Witnesses have placed Burleson and Prestontogether within three to four hours of the murder. We tracked (Burleson) to the Seattle area, Selinske said.We heard he'd bought a car two days ago, and that he had tried toget money wired to him in Ashland. Fortunately, everything worked out, andthe bad guy's in jail, and nobody got hurt. Selinske said police had tied Burleson to the murder based on evidenceturned up in a search of his Westminster apartment and a vehicle. A secondsuspect, not yet in custody, is thought to have been present with Burlesonat the time of the killing, Selinske said. No motive has been established for the crime, but Selinske said the evidencesuggested two possibilities. Before his death, Preston had dated Burleson'sex-girlfriend. Also, Preston's personal property was stolen, including awatch, car keys, and car. The Ashland woman, who offered Burleson a ride and took him in, declinedto be named. She said she stopped to help Burleson because she saw his enginecatch fire south of Roseburg as both were traveling southbound. The woman's 13-year-old daughter, who was in the house at the time ofBurleson's arrest, said Tuesday that the arrest seemed creepy only afterthe fact. Burleson, despite numerous scars, tattoos, a festering, 1-inch-widecut on his left hand, and a weird face, had seemed disarminglypersonable during the two weeks or so he was with the family. It made me feel really uncomfortable that he had been in our housethe whole time, playing cards with us, and we were cooking him pancakes, the girl said. But he was like our sister or brother after just ahalf hour of talking to him. The woman said Burleson had talked of his mother's recent death in Californiaand of his search for his teenage brother in Washington. Burleson applied for a job on Thursday at Advanced Business Technologies,a Talent telemarketing company, where he attended training Monday, ABT ownerDeanna Rice said. The woman who helped Burleson said she had no fears that Burleson wouldhave harmed her or her family because I do things from a very intuitiveplace. I don't have the same reason for fear that other parents would.
