Speedway hosts start of big week WHITE CITY � The fastest cars on the track return to the Southern Oregon Speedway on Monday night when the Northern Sprint Tour makes its second appearance of the summer. Monday marks the beginning of the tour�s Northwest Speedweek, in which the drivers will compete in six races in six days at five different tracks. More than $84,000 in purse money will be paid out to the sprint car drivers. A field of 60 cars from throughout the Northwest and California is expected to complete the series of races, which kick off in White City Monday and then hit tracks in Cottage Grove (Tuesday), Lebanon (Wednesday), Yakima, Wash., (Thursday) and Elma, Wash. (Friday and Saturday). Top drivers expected to compete include defending NST points champion Shawna Wilskey, 1997 champion Rick Fauver and Dan Menne of Fort Jones, Calif., a regular at the White City track in past years. Menne stands fourth in this season�s NST point standings. Central Point�s Billy (the Kid) Nutter is also expected to race around the one-third mile clay oval. The open-wheeled, winged sprint cars weigh just 1,300 pounds but come equipped with more than 700 horsepower. Also competing will be mini stocks, super trucks and dwarf cars. Gates open at 4 p.m. with racing to follow. Admission is $15 for adults and $13 for kids 7-12 and seniors 60 and older.
