Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend May 22, 2005 Stoutenburgh’s gutsy effort helps Crater boys finish eighth By DON HUNT Mail Tribune EUGENE — Crater’s Isaac Stoutenburgh stepped off the awards stand, staggered a few steps, grabbed his knees and took a deep breath. Ten feet away, Summit’s Kenyon Neuman surrendered his breakfast. The two runners had just completed a grueling 1,500-meter run at the Class 4A state track meet Saturday at Hayward Field. Unlike Neuman, Stoutenburgh managed a smile. "That’s the hardest I’ve ever run," Stoutenburgh said. "Those last 200 meters, I couldn’t even feel my legs." Advertisement Stoutenburgh settled for fourth place, but he set a school record in the 1,500 for the third time in 18 days, clocking 3 minutes, 55.97 seconds. Stoutenburgh’s efforts, which included a school record in the 3,000 on Friday, helped the Comets to eighth place in the team standings — their best showing in more than 20 years. Crater’s other point-getters Saturday were Adam Goff, who placed third in the 110 hurdles, and Greg Dallaire, who placed fifth in the 800. Summit edged pre-meet favorite Jesuit for the team title. The Bend-based Storm registered 56 points to 49 for the Crusaders. Benson claimed third with 41½ points and Barlow was fourth with 40. Rounding out the top eight were Tualatin (32), Newberg (31), Roseburg (27) and Crater (24½ ). Stoutenburgh showed the guts of a one-armed boxer in the 1,500 as he shot into the lead with two laps to go. He used the same strategy to win the Southern Oregon Conference district meet, and Saturday was able to hold off the state’s best for more than a lap. But then the big kickers — Neuman, Benson’s Zuber Amed and Central Catholic’s Kenny Klotz — shifted into overdrive and passed Stoutenburgh on the backstretch of the final lap. The Crater runner was operating on fumes over the final 200 meters. Amed triumphed in 3:53.03, Klotz captured second in 3:54.36 and Neuman nabbed third in 3:54.52. Stoutenburgh’s time of 3:55.97 would have won the state meet six of the previous 11 years. "I knew I wouldn’t be able to bury those guys when I took off, but that was the only chance I had of winning," Stoutenburgh said. "My plan was to fight them off. I couldn’t do it, but I gave it everything I had." Goff clocked the fastest time in Friday’s qualifying heat of the 110 hurdles, and he got off to a good start Saturday, but he failed to hold off Beaverton’s Tyler McBee and Jesuit’s Nick Obradovich. "All I can think of is, the pressure got to me," said Goff, who was clocked in 15.12 after running 15.02 Friday and 14.8 earlier in the season. Coupled with his tie for third place in Friday’s pole vault, Goff scored 11½ of the Comets’ 24½ points. Dallaire, meanwhile, grabbed the lead in the 800 with one lap to go but gave it back 50 meters later and finished fifth in 1:55.34. "I ran a faster time in my qualifying heat (1:54.91) but everyone went out harder today and that changed my race plan," Dallaire said. The best single-event performance by a boys SOC team came from Grants Pass’ 4x400 relay. With sophomore Dusty Parrish registering a 49.8 anchor split, the Cavemen clocked a school-record 3:23.02. Eagle Point throwers Jake Olson and Jered McClellan also performed well. Olson finished third in the shot put with a heave of 56-6½ while McClellan was fourth in the javelin with a mark of 189-2. Grant High’s Suh Ndamukong, who is headed to Nebraska on a football scholarship, launched a mammoth throw of 61-4 to win the shot while Newberg’s Alex Wolff set a meet record of 213-5 in the javelin. "I practiced at Lane (Community College) yesterday and had a couple of 60-foot throws," Olson said. "It’s a little disappointing because I know I’m capable of doing better, but I had a pretty good meet." Olson finished third in the discus on Friday with a lifetime best toss of 158-7. Summit failed to win an individual event, but the Storm picked up big points from John Torsey, Aaron Campbell and Nathan Crabtree in the sprints, and both of its relay teams produced victories.
