Illinois Valley scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to claim a 4-3 victory over the Pirates in a Skyline Conference game. Jessica Ragsdale walked, stole second and third, then came home on a passed ball. Phoenix pitcher Taylor Barrett covered home on the play and made the tag on Ragsdale but the ball was knocked loose. Ragsdale, however, didn’t slide on the play, prompting a protest from Pirate coach Molly Pendergast. "She didn’t slide and she knocked the ball from our pitcher’s glove," said Pendergast, whose team is one half game behind Illinois Valley. "There is a must-slide rule (at home). Advertisement "(The umpires) said she made an attempt to get out of the way. Obviously, there was not enough of an attempt." Despite the loss, Phoenix (13-8, 11-4 Skyline) still controls its own destiny. The Pirates, who hold the tiebreaker over Illinois Valley by winning two of three against the Cougars, will be conference champions if they win their three remaining games. "We don’t mind taking the long road," said Pendergast. "I think we do well under pressure." Phoenix tied the game in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs on an RBI single by Tawnya Tidwell and a sacrifice fly by Shonda George. Barrett, pitching after nine days of rest because of an injury, gave up eight hits in the loss. Alex Hanscom had two hits to lead Phoenix, while Shannon Looch paced the Cougars with a pair of hits. Illinois Valley (13-5, 12-4) has two games left on its schedule. "This conference is so unpredictable," said IV coach Justine Johnson. "Anything can happen at this point." Ruatta laid down a bunt just inside the first-base line to score Shea Miller from third base. North Valley (6-11 Skyline) pitcher Casie Hinkle finished with six strikeouts, one walk and gave up only two hits. Karly Lusk struck out six and walked one for Rogue River (6-9 Skyline). Vanessa Pisan allowed four hits and struck out four in Mazama’s final home game. The 13 runs is a season-high for the Black Tornado (13-9, 6-6 SOC), which scored seven times in the sixth inning to end the game. Deni Rowley went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs. Katie Gould added two hits and two runs, while Stephanie Haskett and Amanda Volgarino each had a pair of hits. Klamath Union fell to 3-9 in the SOC. With darkness about to set in, Roelena Rolie of South Medford blasted an RBI double to score Kinzie Towry for the final run. Rolie finished with two doubles and three RBIs and Towry added two hits for South. In her final home game, Cascade Christian senior Rusti Mosser went 5-for-7 with three RBIs. North Medford’s Logan Odom knocked in pinch-runner Mike Longmire for the final run of the day in the fifth. ROSEBURG 6, EAGLE POINT 3 — At Eagle Point, Mickey Schmorde capped a five-run seventh inning with a three-run homer to lift Roseburg past Eagle Point. Eagle Point led 3-1 and needed only two more outs to claim victory, but the Indians rallied to overcome strong pitching by the Eagles’ Derek Grieve. Grieve notched a three-hitter through six and struck out two batters before running out of gas in the decisive inning. With a three-run lead, Roseburg (19-5, 17-2 SOC) then brought in ace Blake Keitzman to strike out the side in the bottom of the seventh. Ryan Augino, Nick Staller and Casey Reedy each had two hits and a double for Eagle Point (6-18, 3-16). For Roseburg, Mitchell Nelson, Aaron Buxton and Quentin Clark each doubled. Phoenix (11-4 Skyline) also got strong hitting from Dustin Smith, who added three hits and scored twice. D.J. Ferrin and Aaron Decker each doubled and Ryan Soriano added a triple for the Pirates. Six different Chieftains drove in runs in their six-run first inning on five singles. Castro only allowed four hits in the complete-game victory. Gary Richardson’s two-run home run in the second inning put the Chieftains (19-3, 13-2 Skyline) up 8-0.
