But why exactly is this safer than our old cards? — Mel S., Medford Well, Mel, chip-enabled cards aren’t only popular in Oregon, or even the nation — these cards are accepted in more than 80 countries worldwide. If anything, it will make travel — international and local — easier. But does it make transactions safer? The simple answer is, yes, it does. According to www.usbank.com , counterfeit card fraud is the largest point-of-sale category of fraud. Chip-enabled cards offer more security and lessen the risk of fraud. The card has a microchip embedded within it that provides additional security against fraud, says the U.S. Bank website. The chip makes every transaction unique by creating a specific one-time code required for a transaction to be approved. The code is nearly impossible to duplicate in a counterfeit card.
