A California man is behind bars after attempting to elude police in an SUV that cut through the landscaping of a popular Medford shopping center and damaged a Medford police officer’s car. Michael James Macabe, 23, was arrested on a string of felony drug, eluding and criminal mischief charges after he allegedly rammed a K9 officer’s cruiser with a Ford Expedition SUV at the Northgate Center parking lot Friday evening, according to Medford police. A multi-agency police pursuit ensued involving Central Point and Medford officers. At 8:30 p.m. Friday, the Medford K9 officer had attempted to box in Macabe’s silver Expedition with his Dodge Charger cruiser at the Northgate Center near Chipotle. Macabe allegedly put the SUV in reverse and accelerated into the cruiser — nearly striking the officer and causing front end damage to the police car. The driver then left the parking lot, driving over landscaping before exiting northbound on Highway 99. Nearby Medford officers joined in the chase, as did a Central Point officer, before Macabe allegedly ditched the SUV near the intersection of Mace and Merriman roads. After a brief foot chase, officers arrested Macabe about 100 yards away from the SUV. As of Saturday afternoon, Macabe remained in the Jackson County Jail on $102,500 bail on felony counts of manufacturing, delivering and possessing heroin, two counts of attempting to elude police in a vehicle, two counts of first-degree criminal mischief and misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest, recklessly endangering another person, reckless driving and hit-and-run with property damage.
