A 55-year-old woman who lives on White Schoolhouse Road, Cave Junction, called 9-1-1 at about 1:30 a.m. Friday to report that a man she didn't know was breaking down the front door of her house and threatening to kill her, Josephine County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Randy Lucas said. The woman took her three children, two age 11 and one 6, into a bedroom and prepared to protect herself and the children with a large flashlight, Lucas said. The man continued to violently kick down the steel door, shouting that he would kill her with a knife and shoot her. He crashed through the door and barricaded himself at the doorway. Deputies Keith Hubbard and Cam Montrose arrived moments later and forced their way into the home. The man fought with deputies, who had to use a Taser to subdue him. One deputy suffered scrapes on his hand during the scuffle. "It's everybody's worse nightmare — someone kicking down your door in the middle of the night and threatening to kill you," Lucas said. Deputies arrested Joseph R. Hernandez, 27, of the 100 block of South Junction Avenue, Cave Junction, on charges of first-degree burglary, first-degree criminal trespassing, first-degree criminal mischief, first-degree disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, assault on a public safety officer and four counts of menacing. He was lodged in the Josephine County Jail. Lucas said Hernandez and the victim didn't know one another. Hernandez was intoxicated at the time and had a pocketknife, but no gun, Lucas said.
