Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Advertisement Email Story to a Friend November 24, 2005 Forest Service devises plan to remove tui chubs The next phase in the plan to rid Diamond Lake of its invading tui chubs comes Tuesday when the Forest Service begins lowering the lake levels to corral the chubs. The Umpqua National Forest has completed its reconstruction of a 51-year-old canal used when rotenone was first used to kill chubs in the eastern Douglas County lake. At 10 a.m. Tuesday, Forest Service employees will open a valve that will start spilling water into Lake Creek and down into the North Umpqua River drainage. Gauges will be used to control the flows to where the lake will drop about a half-inch a day until the lake is drawn down six more feet, Umpqua Forest spokeswoman Susan Johnson says. "It’s a slow release over the winter," Johnson says. Already, the lake is down about two feet from its normal late-fall levels thanks to extra releases into Lake Creek from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife weir, Johnson says. Two new U.S. Geological Survey gauges on Lake Creek will help monitor flows to minimize any negative effects to downstream water quality, hydropower and fisheries in the North Umpqua basin, Johnson says. The lake is set for rotenone treatment next fall, then it will be restocked with rainbow trout.
