CRIME Police say ongoing dispute led to Monday stabbing Comment By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Follow @@RyanPfeil MailTribune.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Follow @@RyanPfeil Posted Dec. 1, 2015 at 2:28 PM Updated Dec 1, 2015 at 6:37 PM By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Follow @@RyanPfeil Posted Dec. 1, 2015 at 2:28 PM Updated Dec 1, 2015 at 6:37 PM » RELATED CONTENT • Medford man sentenced in stabbing case » Social News The two people suspected of stabbing a man in west Medford Monday before engaging in a three-hour standoff with police reportedly had been in an ongoing dispute with the victim. Investigators named the assault suspects, 48-year-old Hank David Nevarez and 43-year-old Leila Ruth Carlson, Tuesday. Nevarez and Carlson are romantically involved, police said. What started the feud is still under investigation, but police said it's not particularly important to the case. "We have our ideas about what precipitated (the assault), but we don't know that for certain," Lt. Mike Budreau said. "Regardless, it doesn't really matter what the dispute was; it doesn't warrant that type of a response." Prior to the standoff, the 22-year-old victim approached a police squad car on North Ross Lane and reported he had been stabbed outside a nearby shopping center. Budreau said the man had been leaving in his truck when Nevarez and Carlson pulled up behind him in a vehicle. They got out and walked toward the vehicle, and the 22-year-old also got out. That was when he saw the pair were armed with knives and tried to jump back in his vehicle. He was struck in the leg, police said. Police identified the suspects quickly and were at their home, in the 900 block of Murray Street, in a matter of minutes. Carlson and Nevarez refused to come out, so Medford police called in its SWAT team. After getting a warrant, police entered the home at about 4:40 p.m. and subdued the two suspects with Taser-type stun guns. No nearby residences were evacuated. Washington School, located a block away, was put on notice but not locked down. On Tuesday, Nevarez and Carlson were arraigned in Jackson County Circuit Court on charges of second- and third-degree assault, attempt to commit a felony, unlawful use of a weapon and resisting arrest, court records show. Both remained in the Jackson County Jail on $1 million bail Tuesday. Reach reporter Ryan Pfeil at 541-776-4468 or [email protected] . Follow him at www.twitter.com/ryanpfeil .
