County Web site offers chance to track mail-in election returns A daily count of ballots returned for the Nov. 2 mail-in election is now just a couple of clicks away on Jackson County's Web site. Here's how to do it: Go to the page at www.jacksoncounty.org Click the "Elections" button on the left side of the page. When you are on the "Elections" page, click on "Voter Returns by Precinct," which depicts a map of Jackson County with precinct turnout by percentages. The countywide return of ballots as of Thursday was 9,908 ballots, barely 9 percent of the county's more than 100,000 registered voters. County Clerk Kathy Beckett said she hoped the return would be greater, but the complexity of some of the state measures may be delaying voter responses. The web site also has more detailed maps of 10 cities. The Ashland page includes the percentage of ballots returned in each precinct in the past 24 hours. Ashland voters have two bond issues on the ballot. The return rates are important for Ashland, Shady Cove and countywide because any of the four bond issues Nov. 2 can pass under Oregon's double-majority rule only if a majority of registered voters cast ballots and a majority vote for approval. Keith Massie, manager for the county's Geographic Information Systems services, said numbers will be updated daily. Daily users should hit "refresh" on their web browser every day to obtain the latest information. Massie said the page is an experiment to see how county information can be packaged for easy access on the Internet. He invites comments to his e-mail address: [email protected] . Election results will be posted on the site after the deadline of 8 p.m. Nov. 2. Mail Tribune Copyright The Mail Tribune 1999, Medford, Oregon USA
