LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, April 5 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 5, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 5, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Many workers are excellent In contrast to Ms. Sacks' March 23 letter, "Rudeness abounds," I would like to recognize the excellent workers at both small and large retail and service businesses in the Rogue Valley. Employees are instructed to interact cheerfully with a wide variety of shoppers, and we've all observed certain shoppers exhibiting less than adult behavior. Also, consider that employees may be working at more than one job to support their families. Others, in addition to working, are also carrying a full course load at college or vocational school. Given the innumerable demands on workers' patience and energy, and up to eight hours on their feet, I am continually impressed by their forbearance and helpfulness. Just this past week, Jeff at the Talent Post Office asked me if I would like to see the latest stamp (without my even asking), and Lorie at Ray's Food Place in Talent gave me her recipe for chicken enchiladas while expertly ringing up my purchases. These are just two example of the many positive encounters that I have had recently in various local establishments. Joyce Stockstill Talent Stay on the ball In his March 30 letter, "Don’t cut Medicare Advantage," Bill Knight explains why attempts to ration health care are so damaging. Since the GOP took control of both houses, we have been inundated by proposals that undermine not only Medicare, but Social Security itself. It amazes me how many Americans are so continuously willing to undermine their own retirement security by falling for the same old rhetoric of the GOP. I wonder how long it will take for them to finally connect the dots. There is no relationship between our duly entitled citizens and funding for ginned-up wars/military contracts. I think Mr. Knight is on the right track by submitting his letter. They definitely raise public awareness. However, anyone remotely near retirement age should definitely perform their due diligence by reminding Congressman Greg Walden of the following: The 55+ age group is the largest single active voting bloc in the nation (as well as in his district), broken promises are unacceptable and we’ll be willing to make changes if the promises aren’t kept. I also recommend that anyone over 50 check out the following organizations: AARP, NCPSSM and the Senior Citizens League. There truly is strength in numbers. The know-it-all Jackson County hearing officer should take a look at the huge area planted in grapes on the "North Road" near the Applegate store. Wildlife, you are doomed to extinction. Keep the lions. John "Jack" Van Syoc Grants Pass Fumes are carcinogenic I've read the 18-page opinion by the county referenced in the March 21 article. It tentatively gives the asphalt plant in Talent land-use authorization, and has been appealed. It's inductive reasoning, where the conclusion comes first (authorization), and is then supported with a hodgepodge of half-truths, non sequiturs and self-serving characterizations. For example, it claims the (unapproved) conversion of the plant in 2001 from concrete to asphalt has no adverse effect. Such a conversion subjects the environment and nearby residents to hydrocarbons. If you smell asphalt, you're inhaling carcinogens. Piles of recycled asphalt pavement are now there, and they have nasty stuff in them, such as asbestos. The county concocted this opinion because the DEQ threatened to revoke the plant's permit unless it stopped making asphalt, relocated or got land-use authorization. Shockingly, the county gave it authorization. Contrary to comments made by the plant's attorney, relocating will not eliminate 15 jobs. Companies frequently move. More importantly, our commissioners don't get to pick and choose which laws they enforce based on whether they like the outcome. They have to act like we live where there's the rule of law.
