Keith Louis Nutting, 32, of the 200 block of Long Acres Road, Grants Pass, was arraigned on a second-degree robbery charge. Rogue River police believe he robbed Evergreen Federal Bank on Pine Street Tuesday afternoon and fled with about $4,200. The robbery suspect rode a bike down Foothill Boulevard, then tossed the bike off Evans Creek Bridge and ran into the bushes. Anglers along the Rogue River saw a man wearing camouflage running through the brush. Police found a camouflage shirt, but couldn’t locate the man, Rogue River Police Chief Ken Lewis said. Police got their break when a woman on the western edge of town reported seeing a suspicious man walking on the railroad tracks toward Josephine County. "He would have gotten away if that citizen hadn’t called us," Lewis said. "I have already called and thanked her." Acting on the tip, officers closed in on Nutting, who threw a stick at officers. A Josephine County sheriff’s patrol dog was unleashed and in the confusion, bit a deputy. No update on the deputy’s condition was available Wednesday night. Nutting was wearing a life jacket when he was arrested, and police think he had hidden in the Rogue River. All the money reported stolen was recovered, police said. Nutting remained in the Jackson County Jail Wednesday night on $500,000 bail. He is set to appear next in court March 19 for a preliminary hearing.
