NFL REPORT Seahawks trade Harvin to Jets By Wire reports MailTribune.com By Wire reports Posted Oct. 18, 2014 @ 2:00 am By Wire reports Posted Oct. 18, 2014 @ 2:00 am » Social News RENTON, Wash. — In a move that jolted the NFL, Seattle on Friday traded receiver Percy Harvin to the New York Jets for a conditional 2015 draft pick. One source has confirmed to The Seattle Times the deal was done. It was first reported by Fox Sports. The team has yet to officially confirm the trade. One source told The Times that Harvin, 26, “just wasn’t a fit” with the team and that it was as much about what was happening in the locker room as it was Harvin’s production on the field, adding that the team was “just ready to move on” from Harvin. Also a factor is that moving Harvin and his hefty contract will clear up significant salary-cap space, with one source saying it will specifically help the team keep quarterback Russell Wilson and linebackers Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright. All are players the team could re-sign or extend following the 2014 season. The Seahawks acquired Harvin before the 2013 draft for first- and seventh-round picks in 2013 and a third-rounder in 2014 and then signed him to a six-year deal worth as much as $67.5 million. That included $14.5 million guaranteed and it is estimated the team has paid him $25.5 million, including salary and other bonuses. However, the team will save roughly $6.4 million this year in 2014 salary that the Jets will pick up. The Seahawks can roll that money to their salary cap for 2015. Seattle will also save another estimated $5.7 million in cap space for 2015. Several Seahawks referred to the trade in tweets, including defensive end Cliff Avril who wrote: “This business is crazy. … hate to see my boy Percy Harvin go.” The NFL Network reported that Seattle “was in the market” to trade Harvin “for several weeks” after deciding it was time to cut ties. “He’s just a time bomb,” one NFL source said, describing him as “too moody” and noting that Minnesota had also grown tired of dealing with Harvin before dealing him to Seattle. While Harvin arrived with much ballyhoo, there was little payoff other than a kickoff return for a touchdown in the 43-8 victory over Denver in the Super Bowl. Harvin’s Seattle career got off to a belated start as he had hip surgery in late July that kept him out until November. Some around the team wondered if Harvin really needed to have the surgery and couldn’t instead have played through it. It was telling that the announcement of the surgery was made by Harvin on his Twitter account and not via the team, as is usually the case. Harvin played all five games this season and made a team-high 22 catches for 133 yards. JETS: Even as coach Rex Ryan sees improvement from the team, the Jets’ 1-6 record has them close to irrelevancy before the midpoint of the season. “It’s been a big failure obviously. The season’s not over, but you don’t want to be 1-6,” Ryan said on a conference call before the team traded for Percy Harvin. “If you had asked me, I’d have thought we’d be the other way. We expect to win every game. Obviously we’re not finding ways to win and that’s really what it is. We’ve done some good things, we haven’t done it for 60 minutes.” With these losses, Ryan’s job security has become a hot topic, as the Jets seemingly are headed toward missing the playoffs for a fourth straight season. Ryan, who was composed after being combative at times following Thursday’s 27-25 defeat to New England, did not address specifically whether this losing streak has him concerned about his status moving forward. The Jets have not made the playoffs since Ryan’s second season in 2010. “I’m not focused on what’s down the road. I’m focused on the right now. I can’t expect the team to be focused that way if I’m looking down the road,” Ryan said. “This is a wins business, I understand that no doubt. It’s always about the team and that’s always the priority. … Each day we try to go out and get a little bit better. I think if we continue to do that — we have done that — I believe better days are ahead of us.” 49ERS: Linebacker Patrick Willis and left guard Mike Iupati will not play against the Denver Broncos as a result of injuries they suffered in the 49ers’ most recent game. Willis hurt a toe against the St. Louis Rams on Monday night. Coach Jim Harbaugh said it’s not the dreaded turf toe, which can sideline a player for several weeks. Instead, Willis said Friday that he expects to be healthy enough to play in the 49ers first game after their bye, on Nov. 2 against the Rams at Levi’s Stadium. Rookie Chris Borland is slated to make his first NFL start in place of Willis on Sunday night in Denver. Iupati suffered a concussion against the Rams. COWBOYS: Dallas is hoping the home crowd can provide an edge over Eli Manning and the New York Giants Sunday. During the Cowboys’ first three home games, fans of the 49ers, Saints and Texans have attended in impressive numbers, taking over large sections of the Arlington venue. Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant would like to see that turn this week. “We do need more Cowboys fans there,” Bryant said. “That’s exactly what we need, and we need them to be a little bit louder whenever (New York’s) defense is on the field.
