Investigators found the body of 52-year-old Lea P. Borth in a shallow grave near a remote forest road off Highway 140 Sunday afternoon. Joshua D. Peters, 32, suspected of slaying Borth, will appear today in Jackson County Circuit Court to face a charge of murder. Peters remained in the Jackson County Jail Sunday night without bail. An autopsy likely would be scheduled today at the Oregon State Police crime lab in Central Point, said Medford police Lt. Mike Moran. Investigators refused Sunday to discuss how Borth died or the condition of her body. Advertisement Borth and Peters lived together in a house on the first block of North Orange Street in Medford, Moran said. It was unknown Sunday how long the two had lived there, Moran said. Borth’s driver’s license had formerly listed a Talent address as her residence. Her family lives in Texas, Moran added. Officers found Borth’s remains around 4 p.m. Sunday in a wooded area approximately 30 miles from the valley floor up Highway 140, police said. Search and rescue volunteers with dogs assisted. Investigators said it remained unclear when Borth was slain or how long her body had been buried. Police did not know of the crime until a tip came in Saturday afternoon, Moran said. Police received a call around 2 p.m. Saturday from a person whose identity police have kept anonymous. The caller said that a murder suspect was at the Orange Street house, Moran said. Officers surrounded the house and arrested Peters without a struggle. Peters had no previous criminal record, police said. Police searched the Orange Street house for clues Saturday night. Detectives with Ashland and Central Point police departments and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department assisted Medford officers.
