September 04. 2015 12:01AM Letters to the Editor, Sept. 4 Library was a must Regarding the influence of the Jackson County library system in peoples’ relocation decisions, I’m pleased to respond to Tom Winter. Early this decade, we chose to relocate from Minnesota. My husband is retired, and my own job is portable, and can be done anywhere with Internet; we can live anywhere. Our choices included Medford, and we came to investigate in spring 2010. After checking in at the former Red Lion, the first visit we made was to the downtown library. We’d been avid users of our city’s robust public library system; a healthy, handy library was a top criterion for us. We were satisfied that the library system, though smaller than what we were used to, offered what we sought. Since 2011, my husband has volunteered at the Medford branch; he’s also on the board of its Friends. We were pleased when the voters approved the Library District, because it assures stability and a strong future — and demonstrates their belief in the library’s value and commitment to its continuity. Did we move to Medford because of the library? No, but without it, we would not be here, paying property and other taxes, shopping and volunteering. There’s your answer, Mr. Winter. Laurie Zelesnikar Medford Impressed by Sanders On Aug. 7 I made the trip to Portland to see Bernie Sanders, senator from Vermont who is running for president on the Democratic ticket. He spoke at the Moda Center. Over 20,000 people were there! It was amazing! I am so impressed by his straight talk, not usual in political conversation. He only receives money from people who support his views, so he is free to speak his mind. He is for overturning Citizens United, which has drowned out the people's voice. Elections would be publicly financed — so you would't need to be rich to run. Women would get equal pay, yes! Education/college would be free, as would  health care. (Other countries do these things, and we could too if we didn't spend 53 percent of our tax dollars on defense.) He supports better education and opportunity for blacks, and less incarceration. He stated that one man cannot make these changes, but by standing together we can take back our country (with liberty and justice for all). Peggy Elterman Ashland Walk the walk Regarding Planned Parenthood: Regardless of your stance on abortion, statistics show that the world has a population explosion, especially in the third world, but also among the poor in the USA. Methods now used for early term abortions are simple; usually less complicated or painful. Raising an unwanted or unplanned child, especially among those dealing with the crisis of poverty, creates disasters for the parents and children; just read the paper! A child is not a puppy that you can send to the pound if it creates a problem. It is a life-long investment of love, care, worry and expense. So, displeased about PP? Adopt five or six and walk the walk instead of talking the talk. Janet Crawford Medford Trump deserves a kick If Donald Trump ever comes to my house, I am going to kick him. He said John McCain was not a "war hero." If you fly 38 combat missions, are shot down and a POW for over five years, I think that qualifies him as a war hero. I fought in Korea. I know a little bit more than Trump about how hard it is to keep doing your duty when you know that this might be your last day on earth. Just for the record, how did Trump, the hero, avoid being sent to Vietnam? He got an educational deferment. Facing those profs is a whole lot easier than flying through anti-aircraft fire, Mr. Trump.
