Ottaway chooses Michigan editor for top news job CAMPBELL HALL, N.Y. - Ottaway Newspapers Inc., which includes the Mail Tribune, has named a new vice president for news. Ken Hall, executive editor of the Traverse City (Mich.) Record-Eagle since 1996, will begin his new job at the company headquarters in Campbell Hall, effective Jan. 1. Jim Ottaway Jr., chairman of ONI and senior vice president of its parent Dow Jones & Co., made the announcement Monday at the annual meeting of Ottaway editors. "Ken Hall is one of our most creative and energetic editors who is respected by his peers for his relentless efforts to publish constantly improving community newspapers," Ottaway said. Hall will work with the editors at ONI's 19 daily and more than 30 weekly newspapers, concentrating on training and local news. He succeeds David Brace, vice president for news since 1991, who died in April. A search will begin for a new editor in Traverse City, said Record-Eagle publisher Zeke Fleet. Hall came to Michigan after 11 years at the Daily Star in Oneonta, N.Y. Before that he was managing editor of the Bennington (Vt.) Banner and the Brattleboro (Vt.) Reformer. He also was a local news reporter and broadcaster at WVIP radio in Mount Kisco, N.Y. He taught journalism from 1989 to 1995 at the State University of New York in Oneonta. He holds a bachelor's degree in sociology from Princeton University and a master's degree in communications from Stanford University.
