"None of our people were involved in that," said Sheriff Corey Falls. "We stayed put." The Associated Press reported the arrests and death took place at 4:25 p.m. Tuesday during a traffic stop on Highway 395 as members of an armed militia that took over the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge Jan. 2 traveled to John Day. Few details are known about the encounter between police and the militia members, though it has been confirmed that 55-year-old Arizona rancher Robert "LaVoy" Finicum, was shot and killed. Finicum often acted as the group spokesman. Ammon Bundy, 40, leader of the armed occupation, was among the eight arrested. They all face a federal felony charge of "conspiracy to impede officers of the United States from discharging their official duties through the use of force, intimidation or threats," according to an FBI news release. Five people were arrested during the Highway 395 traffic stop, two were arrested in Burns and one was arrested in Arizona. Since the arrests, the FBI and Oregon State Police have set up roadblocks in an effort to contain occupiers who remain inside the refuge. The only people allowed to pass the checkpoints are ranchers who own property in the area. They will be required to show ID if they want to pass, FBI officials said. The militants inside the refuge have said they want federal lands released to local authorities. Bundy's father, Cliven, was involved in a similar standoff in 2014 for refusing to pay federal grazing fees in Nevada. Two deputies, a sergeant and a captain from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department were dispatched to Harney County Monday after Harney County Sheriff David Ward put out a call for assistance to the Oregon State Sheriff's Association. Falls is an OSSA member. He said numerous Oregon counties have sent deputies to provide law enforcement support in Burns while the standoff at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge continues, and that it was Jackson County's turn this week. On Tuesday, Falls said his personnel were there to support local law enforcement, but would not be involved in the standoff. "Nothing has changed from what I've heard," Falls said today. The four Jackson County officers are expected to return from Harney County Friday. All costs related to per diem, lodging, fuel and other travel expenses will be reimbursed through the federal government, officials said.
