Former Eagle Point man recalled for adventurous spirit The parents of Daylon Emery Harrington, who died May 22 in a plane crash in Arizona, said he managed to fit more adventure in his 25 years of life than most 80-year-olds. The Eagle Point High School graduate was co-piloting a single-engine plane near Prescott, Ariz., when it hit a storm system and crashed, killing both Harrington and the pilot, 39-year-old Scott Resnick. Eagle Point residents Gary and Valerie Harrington are mourning their son, while at the same time celebrating his life with Daylon's many friends from across the world. "He had this curiosity about him that probably led to his love of flying," Gary Harrington said. "He did everything — swimming, kayaking, fishing, sailing, snowboarding. He led life to its fullest." Harrington had numerous flight endorsements, including his commercial pilot's license and he was a certified flight instructor, his parents said. He studied flying in Canada at Prairie Bible College in Three Hills, Alberta. After that, he focused most of his flying efforts on helping people. "He used to fly food and supplies to families living in Alaska," Valerie Harrington said. "Those were the kinds of trips he enjoyed." While in Guatemala, Harrington transported a "deathly sick" woman from the jungle to a hospital, an act that might have saved the woman's life, Gary Harrington said. "After that trip, he was like, 'Wow, flying is the thing I want to do from now on,' " his father said. Before his death, Harrington was living in Beaverton and attending airplane mechanic school. "He didn't yet know for sure what he wanted to do for a living," Valerie Harrington said. "He had plenty of options, though." The last contact the Harrington's had with their son was on Mother's Day, when he met them at their vacation home in Sunriver, a central Oregon resort he had flown them to several times. Though he had traveled the world and made friends along the way, Harrington always planned to return to the Rogue Valley, his parents said. "No matter where he went, this was home to him," his mother said. Harrington's memorial service is planned for 4 p.m. Saturday at Trail Christian Fellowship, 18881 Highway 62, about two miles south of Shady Cove. There will be a potluck dinner afterward. Donations can be made through Trail Christian Fellowship for mission aviation scholarships in honor of Harrington. Call Chris Conrad at 776-4471; e-mail [email protected].
