YMCA officials in Medford reported that a pumping mechanism failed during the night of Tuesday, June 28, which filled the room with water and damaged electrical panels, wiring, motors, pumps and control units. Swim lessons, water fitness classes, and all other pool-related activities are canceled for the rest of the summer because of the incident. During the interim, Ashland and Grants Pass YMCA facilities will be open to Medford members at no charge, though access could be limited because of capacity. The city of Medford's Jackson Pool will also be available for use, YMCA officials said. The estimated dollar amount of damage created by the flooding was not immediately available. The rest of the YMCA facility, located at 522 W. Sixth St., remains open. That includes the pool locker rooms, though no hot water is available because of damage to the aquatic center's water heater caused by the flooding. A different water heater is still functioning, however, which serves the adult locker rooms. In a letter to members and the community at large, Rogue Valley Family YMCA director Brad Russell called the situation "unforeseeable." "YMCA staff is working closely with our insurance company in addition to using certified plumbers and electricians to get the work accomplished as quickly as possible," the letter stated. Staff said they plan to rebuild the flooded room, along with improvements, which will be paid for by a grant from the Oregon Community Foundation. The cost of the reconstruction was not immediately available. "The YMCA and our community will feel like there is a brand-new aquatic center opening this fall," the letter said.
